“Close your eyes and think of England” (Nhắm mắt lại và nghĩ về nước Anh) là một thành ngữ đã lỗi thời. Ngày xưa, nhất là thời Victorian và Edwardian ở nước Anh, thành ngữ này thường dùng để khuyên bảo những cô dâu về nhà chồng trong những cuộc hôn nhân không phải vì tình yêu, mà là sắp đặt vì mục đích tiền bạc, hay môn đăng hộ đối, hoặc vì địa vị.
Nếu cô dâu có trót rơi vào một cuộc hôn nhân như thế thì nên nghĩ tới bổn phận và nghĩa vụ của mình mà nhắm mắt cam chịu chứ không nên than phiền. Tinh thần của câu thành ngữ là khuyên người ta như thế.
Trong lịch sử Á Đông ta cũng thấy không hiếm gì trường hợp những người phụ nữ phải hy sinh tình yêu và thanh xuân cho chuyện lớn quốc gia. Ở ta có Huyền Trân Công Chúa, hay ở Tàu có chuyện Chiêu Quân Cống Hồ. Hẳn nếu hai nàng đó ở bên trời tây thì người ta sẽ khuyên hai nàng là “close your eyes and think of China (or Dai Viet)”
Tuy nhiên đó là cách dùng nguyên thủy của câu thành ngữ này. Ngày nay, người ta dùng nó với hàm ý là sự cam chịu một tình huống nào đó mình không thấy thoải mái.
